As an engineer, the statement “if the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count” really bothered me. I was trained that “the facts are the facts.” I believe this statement can be misconstrued and I feel the best way to help would be explain this statement as I use it. Much of the so called facts are really not permanent, just temporary conditions. For example, if I look in the mirror and decide that I need to lose 15 pounds, I may contemplate the fact and think “Orrin, you are out of shape, and that is the way it is. That is the fact!” I would argue, however, that that fact may be true today, but if the dream is big enough the facts don’t count, because the facts can be changed by hard work and vision. For example, I have lost 10 pounds over the last five weeks by that very process of thinking. Very few facts, when it comes to your personal situation are permanent. Finances, health, relationships, spiritual life, and other conditions can be changed by self discipline. I live my life not by self-limiting facts, but by self-improving discipline and vision. This has made all the difference in my life.
What will you choose for your life - self-limitations controlled by temporary facts, or self-improvement through self discipline, resulting in an alteration of the facts?
