Welcome to my leadership blog. Ideas have consequences and the goal of this blog is to discuss ideas of consequence. Some ideas you may agree with and some you may disagree. No worries. The only rules are that you post under your own name and that you think and discuss in a civil manner. People who attack others only prove they have reached the limit of their logic. The Bible states, "Iron sharpens iron" and we will sharpen one another by what we read, write and think. The goal of this blog is to help us identify and follow truth in all areas of our lives. I encourage you to join our leadership discussion and transform yourself and others through the renewing of our minds.
View Article  Abraham Lincoln - Quote of the Day

Here is an excellent quote from Abraham Lincoln for today's student of history.  George Santayana said, "Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it."   Ponder the principles that President Lincoln is teaching and ask yourself if anything has changed today.  No matter how much technology changes, human nature has not changed.  God Bless, Orrin Woodward

Update:  This is not a quote from Abraham Lincoln but a minister in 1942.  Still good information, but from a different source.  Here is the facts:

Summary of the eRumor:  Alleged quotes from Abraham Lincoln about the poor, the weak, prosperity, workers, class hatred, and character.

The Truth:These words are often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, but according to the book They Never Said it: A Book of Fake Quotes, Misquotes, & Misleading Attributions, they are not from Lincoln.

The quotes were published in 1942 by William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister.  He released a pamphlet titled Lincoln On Limitations, which did include a Lincoln quote, but also added 10 statements written by Boetcker himself.

They were:1.  You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
2.  You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong
3.  You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
4.  You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
5.  You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.
6.  You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
7.  You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
8.  You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
9.  You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
10  You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.

People who got the pamphlet thought the 10 statements were written by Lincoln and they have been distributed widely under Lincoln's name.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

Congratulations are in order for Jim and Kathy Paullin!  They are the new media war winners for the week.  Jim and Kathy - formerly in Amway/Quixtar - are living legends in the networking field and have built large communities across the world for several decades.  The Paullins’ joined the MonaVie Team after studying our training and leadership culture.   Jim and Kathy sold themselves on the MonaVie Team systems and now are the champions of the media war.  Jim is a solid business thinker and savvy business person.  Kathy lights up the room with here smile and encouragement to anyone she meets.  Together, they are a formidable team on their way to Black Diamond!  Laurie and I are proud to have them on the MonaVie Team and proud of their accomplishments.  Here is their official biography from the Team site.  God Bless, Orrin Woodward

Jim & Kathy started dating in high school and married the day after graduating from college, 41 years ago. After getting his MBA, Jim started climbing the corporate ladder, working for a major paper company while teaching finance at Georgia State University at night to bring in extra income.  Kathy worked as a chemist and later as a bookkeeper for an engineering firm.  When presented with a leadership development training system, Jim was on board, but Kathy was skeptical.  It was not until they saw the difference in their financial thinking and decision making that Kathy was sold on the idea.  Because of this training, Jim and Kathy have enjoyed not only the benefits of an improved financial life, but also the benefits of improved relationships.  They enjoy spending time with their two children, Lynette & Jeff, and now grandchildren as well.  When Jim and Kathy met the founders of Team and looked at the community of leaders Team had developed, they were more than impressed.  They recognized that Team had the magic ingredient that had been missing, something that they both wanted and needed: a world class system that encourages personal growth in every area of life.  Since joining Team, Jim & Kathy have been inspired to reach for new dreams while helping others achieve their full potential. They are excited about sharing the Team culture with as many people as possible with a goal of bringing character, integrity, and responsibility back as core values to live by.

Several years back, I had the opportunity to meet Clay Dyer at a late night meeting during a convention.  Billy and Peggy had some leaders back in their suite and Clay was demonstrating to us how he fished and competed in Bass tournaments.   I had come into the convention to encourage and inspire others, but I was the one encouraged and inspired by Clay's example.  Clay understands that in life, you don't always control the cards you are dealt.  But you do control how you choose to play the cards.   What bad breaks have you been given in life?  Are you compounding the problem by focusing on the obstacles or are you overcoming the obstacles through focusing on your gifts.

Clay could have easily cursed his fate and been a victim.  Instead, Clay is one of the most inspirational human beings that I have had the privilege of meeting.  Remember, what you do in life matters.   Clay's Christian testimony is an inspiration to so many.  What testimony is your life giving to the watching world?   In our political discussions, everyone is talking about change.  I believe that real change always begins on the inside.  Clay told me that he wanted his life to be a testament for what can be overcome when you put your mind to it.  The MonaVie Team is gathering a group of overcomers to Have Fun, Make Money and Make a Difference.   Enjoy the video and please share your inspirations based upon the video.  God Bless, Orrin Woodward

Disclaimer:  The following post is shared in the spirit of humor.  Morpheus is not really in the MonaVie Team.

Matrix is one of my favorite movies and the parallels between the movie and real life is breathtaking.  Many people before they saw the plan felt that there had to be more to life.  Laurie and I recently sponsored Morpheus and he is sharing the plan to his new prospect, Neo.

Neo takes first night materials and Morpheus books a set time to get back with Neo to follow through.  At the follow through, Morpheus shares with Neo how many people are stuck in a rut in their lives.  Morpheus committs to help Neo break free by getting a big dream and focusing on new results.

Are you stuck in the 95% system?  Are you ready to break out and learn more truths about yourself and communities?  Is Morpheus talking to you and your situation?  Maybe it is time for a change. Maybe, you feel like Neo and that there must be more to life.  Points to ponder.  God Bless, Orrin Woodward

Michael Phelps: The Inspirational Story for the Entire World

Besides cheering the 'wonder' swimmer Michael Phelps, we can learn a few lessons from him which will help us create success. Some of them are single-minded focus on your goal, perseverance and continuously raising the bar.

Michael Phelps-the name is now in the air. We all know what he’s doing; we’re all mesmerized by what he’s doing, and of course, we’re all cheering him. In case someone from a different planet reads this-Phelps is the American swimmer who’s won FOURTEEN Olympic Gold medals! Also, he now holds the record for the most gold medals won at a single Olympics; a total of eight, surpassing Mark Spitz, the legendary American swimmer best known for winning a then-record seven gold medals at the 1972 Olympic Games, in the 2008 Beijing Olympic. He’s been called not only the greatest swimmer, but also the greatest Olympian of all time, and Mark Spitz himself has called him the greatest athlete of all time.

Also, he holds all sorts of "youngest ever" records. He first competed in the Olympic Games when he was 15. In 2000, at 15 years and 9 months, Phelps became the youngest man ever to set a swimming world record, by breaking the world record in a 200 m butterfly…and now if I try to list all the records he’s set till date and all the history that he’s created-well, I’ll have to write about five articles.

Dreaming big

"Dream as big as you can dream and anything is possible. I am sort of in a dream world. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure it is real."-Michael Phelps

After winning his seventh Gold in the Beijing Olympics, Phelps said that tying Mark Spitz's record had been his goal. "In my dreams I always wanted it," he stated. "I thought in the perfect circumstances I could do it."

In an interview, when asked whether he’d expected such international fame and record Olympic success when he’d started swimming as a kid, Phelps said he’d always wanted to win Olympic golds and set world records.

You can achieve only what you dream of. Self-limiting beliefs ("I can’t", "I’m not worthy", "I’m not talented"…) have a far more profound effect on what we do (and hence what results we create) than we think. Believing in yourself and your ability to achieve your dream is an absolute must if you’re to really get there, and as they say, no dream is too big. You have a dream means you have the capability of realizing it.

Single-minded focus

But we all know that, don’t we? Of course we also know that Phelps has a body particularly suited to swimming. Also, many will say his talent is God-gifted. But ask him what makes him soooo special, and he’ll tell you, "I love the competition and I love to train."

That’s what makes the biggest difference, not only to an Olympic level sports career, but to any life, for anyone. You and I don’t need to be sports stars to realize that success in any field ultimately comes down to your attitude-a few things like your grit, your ability (and desire) to focus, your perseverance…Here’s a life-lesson all of us can and should learn from the Baltimore Bullet.

Perseverance

This brings us to the second thing about him that amazes me-his ability to ‘be at it’, hour after hour, day after day, year after year. I read a newspaper article which described his daily routine as "eat-sleep-train. Repeat". Given that, do you think he’d ever have achieved the kind of inhuman success he’s now enjoying, if he hadn’t put in such inhuman amount of hard work?  Attention those of you who hide behind the excuse of ‘lack of talent’ when it comes to trying and creating your own success! Paste a poster of Phelps on your bedroom wall and write on it: "eat-sleep-train!", so that the next time you feel like resorting to the old I’m-not-talented-enough-to-be-successful routine, he keeps you right on track.

The regular guy

Last but not the least, his ability to keep his head cool in the middle of all that media attention is exemplary. Imagine how much more difficult it must be for him to maintain focus, than it is for us, given that he’s the constant centre of attention of the entire world, especially now. Mark Spitz has said, "I've always marveled at the fact that in the last four years, he has had to live with a lot more expectations and anxiety than I had to deal with."

No matter what goes on in the outside world, his almost other-worldly focus has never shifted from its mainstay.  Neither has all the adulation and fanfare gone to his head.  I've heard him mention in numerous intervies, "There are a lot of things I have to work on," which is an important lesson on how to keep your head cool and your mind focused even if you're overwhelmed with your own success.  (Luckily that sort of scenario doesn't arise too often in the lives of most of us!)

So that’s all about today’s life lessons, straight from Michael Phelps! Keep cheering him, and meanwhile keep his lessons in mind!

Here is a fantastic inspirational video from Lou Holtz.  I love the goal setting portion and the book he references called Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwarz.  This has always been one of my favorite books since the first time that I read it.  Lou Holtz has gone into numerous different teams that were not winning and turned them into bowl contenders.  Coach Holtz understands that you must create a culture of excellence if you are going to create winning teams.  That is exactly what the MonaVie Team believes -  Excellence comes from consciously creating the right habits and staying focused on the majors not the minors in life.  Are you ready to create excellence in your life?  There are too many companies and individuals that accept mediocrity.  The MonaVie Team is committed to making a difference and in order to make a difference, we must be different.  Excellence is deviance and it is different!  We only have one life to live, let's make it count.  Enjoy the video and apply its lessons to your life and business.  God Bless, Orrin Woodward

We probably all know people, either at work or in our personal lives, who are really good listeners. No matter what kind of situation we're in, they always seem to know just what to say - and how to say it - so that we're not offended or upset. They're caring and considerate, and even if we don't find a solution to our problem, we usually leave feeling more hopeful and optimistic.

We probably also know people who are masters at managing their emotions. They don't get angry in stressful situations. Instead, they have the ability to look at a problem and calmly find a solution. They're excellent decision makers, and they know when to trust their intuition. Regardless of their strengths, however, they're usually willing to look at themselves honestly. They take criticism well, and they know when to use it to improve their performance.

People like this have a high degree of emotional intelligence, or EI. They know themselves very well, and they're also able to sense the emotional needs of others.

Would you like to be more like this?

As more and more people accept that emotional intelligence is just as important to professional success as technical ability, organizations are increasingly using EI when they hire and promote.

For example, one large cosmetics company recently revised their hiring process for salespeople to choose candidates based on emotional intelligence. The result? Salespeople hired with the new system have sold, on average, $91,000 more than salespeople selected under the old system. There has also been significantly lower staff turnover among the group chosen for their emotional intelligence.

So, what exactly is emotional intelligence, and what can you do to improve yours?

What Is Emotional Intelligence?

We all have different personalities, different wants and needs, and different ways of showing our emotions. Navigating through this all takes tact and cleverness - especially if we hope to succeed in life. This is where emotional intelligence becomes important.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize your emotions, understand what they're telling you, and realize how your emotions affect people around you. Emotional intelligence also involves your perception of others: when you understand how they feel, this allows you to manage relationships more effectively.

People with high emotional intelligence are usually successful in most things they do. Why? Because they're the ones that others want on their team. When people with high EI send an email, it gets answered. When they need help, they get it. Because they make others feel good, they go through life much more easily than people who are easily angered or upset.

Characteristics of Emotional Intelligence

Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist, developed a framework of five elements that define emotional intelligence:

Self-Awareness: People with high emotional intelligence are usually very self-aware. They understand their emotions, and because of this, they don't let their feelings rule them. They're confident – because they trust their intuition and don't let their emotions get out of control.

They're also willing to take an honest look at themselves. They know their strengths and weaknesses, and they work on these areas so they can perform better. Many people believe that this self-awareness is the most important part of emotional intelligence.

Self-Regulation: This is the ability to control emotions and impulses. People who self-regulate typically don't allow themselves to become too angry or jealous, and they don't make impulsive, careless decisions. They think before they act. Characteristics of self-regulation are thoughtfulness, comfort with change, integrity, and the ability to say no.

Motivation: People with a high degree of emotional intelligence are usually motivated. They're willing to defer immediate results for long-term success. They're highly productive, love a challenge, and are very effective in whatever they do.

Empathy: This is perhaps the second-most important element of emotional intelligence. Empathy is the ability to identify with and understand the wants, needs, and viewpoints of those around you. People with empathy are good at recognizing the feelings of others, even when those feelings may not be obvious. As a result, empathetic people are usually excellent at managing relationships, listening, and relating to others. They avoid stereotyping and judging too quickly, and they live their lives in a very open, honest way.

Social Skills: It's usually easy to talk to and like people with good social skills, another sign of high emotional intelligence. Those with strong social skills are typically team players. Rather than focus on their own success first, they help others develop and shine. They can manage disputes, are excellent communicators, and are masters at building and maintaining relationships.

As you've probably determined, emotional intelligence can be a key to success in your life – especially in your career. The ability to manage people and relationships is very important in all leaders, so developing and using your emotional intelligence can be a good way to show others the leader inside of you.

How to Improve Your Emotional Intelligence

The good news is that emotional intelligence CAN be taught and developed. Many books and tests are available to help you determine your current EI, and identify where you may need to do some work. You can also use these tips:

Observe how you react to people. Do you rush to judgment before you know all of the facts? Do you stereotype? Look honestly at how you think and interact with other people. Try to put yourself in their place, and be more open and accepting of their perspectives and needs.

Look at your work environment. Do you seek attention for your accomplishments? Humility can be a wonderful quality, and it doesn't mean that you're shy or lack self-confidence. When you practice humility, you say that you know what you did, and you can be quietly confident about it. Give others a chance to shine - put the focus on them, and don't worry too much about getting praise for yourself.

Do a self-evaluation. What are your weaknesses? Are you willing to accept that you're not perfect and that you could work on some areas to make yourself a better person? Have the courage to look at yourself honestly - it can change your life.

Examine how you react to stressful situations. Do you become upset every time there's a delay or something doesn't happen the way you want? Do you blame others or become angry at them, even when it's not their fault? The ability to stay calm and in control in difficult situations is highly valued - in the business world and outside it. Keep your emotions under control when things go wrong.

Take responsibility for your actions. If you hurt someone's feelings, apologize directly – don't ignore what you did or avoid the person. People are usually more willing to forgive and forget if you make an honest attempt to make things right.

Examine how your actions will affect others – before you take those actions. If your decision will impact others, put yourself in their place. How will they feel if you do this? Would you want that experience? If you must take the action, how can you help others deal with the effects?

Key Points

Although "regular" intelligence is important to success in life, emotional intelligence is key to relating well to others and achieving your goals. Many people believe that emotional intelligence is at least as important as regular intelligence, and many companies now use EI testing to hire new staff.

Emotional intelligence is an awareness of your actions and feelings – and how they affect those around you. It also means that you value others, listen to their wants and needs, and are able to empathize or identify with them on many different levels.

View Article  Jack and Effie Reid - New MonaVie Ruby's

Jack and Effie Reid are living legends in the Networking field and formerly were involved with Amway/Quixtar.  I was watching the screen backstage when the new Ruby's were announced at the MonaVie Team event.  To my surprise, I heard the familiar voice of Effie Reid firing up the crowd.  Jack is Mr. Logic and Effie is Mrs. Excitement - together they make an incredible team!  They have built to Ruby level from scratch as they sold their Amway  business and started over.  Not many couple have the courage to start over in their "retirement" years, but Jack and Effie are not your normal couple.  Jack and Effie were sponsored by Jim and Kathy Paulin who also left Amway/Quixtar and were recognized as new Ruby's in Louisville at the MonaVie Team event!

The Reid's departed from Louisville and started a barnstorming tour across the United States, sharing the MonaVie Team opportunity to as many people as they can.  The Reid's are an excellent example of the principle, "Find a defeat in every victory and find a victory in every defeat."  I just received this email from Tim Marks about Jack and Effie:

Just got off the phone with Jack

While alot of folks needed to get home after the major and take a breather. Jack and Effee said, "we are not letting the grass grow under our feet."

They left Louisville and drove to Madison Wisconson for a meeting, then on to Rockford Illionios for another. Still fired up they went on down to Cincinati Ohio. I dont think Jack worries about the fuel prices becuase he carries his car everywhere they go.

They are driving a small little honda, but Effee says if you put the seat down she can still fit the MonaVie surfboard in there.

This is a couple with a passion for LIFE and what they do and they are doing it! Jack says "our feet haven't touched the ground in months"

This is a couple to keep an eye on, as they have the experience, the attitude, and the drive to go diamond and beyond again!  I love the statement, "You're not old until your regrets outnumber your dreams."  Based upon this, Jack and Effie are some of the youngest people on the MV Team!  Laurie and I are very honored to have these living legends on the MonaVie Team.  God Bless, Orrin Woodward

I am sending out a prayer request to all readers of this blog to pray for the Brady family during Terri's brain surgery.  They are such incredible servants and leaders on the Team.  Laurie and I have been friends and business partners with Chris and Terri Brady since 1994.  I cannot think of the proper words to express my love and appreciation for this couples incredible leadership, loyalty, and character.  Terri is in surgery now and I would appreciate you taking the time to ask our Lord and Savior to guide the surgeons hands.  It is times like this that make your realize how special the relationships in life are and how vain everything else is without your close relationships.  Terri announced from stage at the majors, last week in Utah and this week in Louisville, that she was going in for major brain surgery to remove a tumor.  The outpouring of love and encouragement from the MonaVie Team is enough to soften the hardest of hearts.

Please also keep the Amway/Quixtar legal team in your prayers.  Yesterday while Terri was undergoing prepatory surgery for the main surgery, Amway/Quixtar filed a lawsuit against the Brady's.  I would like to believe that this was just a coincidence, but I also know that with two public announcements on the Team stage that Amway would have had to of known the seriousness of the brain surgery.  I would ask that whomever is running the legal strategy at Amway have enough heart to postpone hostilities against the Brady's on all fronts during the very critical surgery and recovery that the Brady's will be enduring.  If anyone has a contact at the Amway Corporation, please respectfully request a cessation of hostilities during this time and feel free to share this site with them.  Terri's brother Tim was kind enough to develop this site to keep everyone updated on Terri's progress.

I thank all of you for being the incredible servants and encouragers that you are.  God Bless, Orrin Woodward
