I had an incredible book called Persian Fire on the Persian history that included the Battle of Thermopylae. This is the stand that King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans did against overwhelming odds. With help from several smaller city states, a couple of thousand men attempted to hold the Hot Gates against tens of thousands of Persians. It is historical moments like this that remind me how important it is to stand for your principles, even in the face of tyranny. In my opinion, I would rather surrender my wealth, status and life rather than surrender my principles and honor. Let each person examine themselves. Are your principles worth fighting for? I love the saying, "A hero dies once, a coward many times." Here is a clip from the movie 300, where King Leonidas tells King Xerxes I that he will not back down to tyranny. Enjoy the clip and if war scenes make you queasy, then you might not want to watch the whole video. I love the dialogue between Xerxes and Leonidas. God Bless, Orrin Woodward

Orrin,
The timing of this movie couldn't have been better. A mentor of mine suggested I watch this when I had some questions stemming from "Aug. 9" (Thank you George!) and information wasn't accessible at the time. I will tell you this, I am a "Spartan". I've watched great men and women be scrutinized and theirs names dragged through the mud, unjustly. I watched these men and women rally "the few" and stand up against the mighty army of "Xerxes". There was a tipping point when my leaders could have packed it in and ran for the hills. I stayed, because I knew they'd never leave my side! For that, I'm eternally grateful to them and have vowed to never leaver their side as well! Your courage and dilgence during a very transitional time should serve as an inspiraton to all. I have no reservations when I say, you are truly a "hero" to me. Thank you! "In His Grip" Gary S. (Team Stealth) Re: King Leonidas & 300 Men - Persian Fire

Earlier in the movie, Leonidas is asked by a emmisary to submit to Xerxes' will.
Leonidas responds, "Submission...now that's a bit of a problem..." NEVER SUBMIT!! Note: The movie, although it is full of violence and gore, is superb. The writing is terrific, but more importantly, the themes of fighting for freedom, of sacrifice, of leadership could not be more clearly expressed. Do yourself a favor...set a goal, run for it, and when you hit it, go buy this movie as a reward. Vince Re: King Leonidas & 300 Men - Persian Fire

To this day, there is a stone lion on the hill where the Spartans died. A Greek epitaph there reads
"Go tell the Spartans, thou who passest by, That here, obedient to their laws, we lie" Orrin and the rest of the TEAM were obedient to the laws of this land, suffering as a result. Now that the battle is over, the hot gates held, let us go forth to secure our future. |
