Here is a super video that captures the essence of one of life's major lessons - Optimism! Thanks goes to Gerald for passing on to me. There is no quicker way to eliminate progress and leaders than to develop a 'woe is me' attitude. I love Les Brown's line, "If you get knocked down, land on your back because if you can look up, you can get up!" Optimism is contagious! Sadly, so is pessimism. What are you infecting your friends and family with? Optimism or pessimism? The choice is all your's, the results are miles apart. Enjoy the video. That's a great lesson about perspective also; life is 5% what happens to us and 95% how we respond. Sometimes all we need to do is see things from a fresh perspective.

Orrin,
I just watched this video this morning and thought to myself, "wow, Orrin would love this on his site..." Anyway, being optimistic is so much better then pessimistic. A person studying the Tri-lateral Leadership Ledger who is pessimistic will never gain the truth. Below are some simple comparisons: Optimistic vs. Pessimistic Thinking Optimistic Thinking Challenge: open to change. take risks. willingness to make the effort. 'I can do it' 'I will try my best' Control: take responsibility for their actions. proactive. 'I have choices and options' 'If I make a mistake I will do whatever it takes to correct it' Commitment: tendency to persist. 'I will keep trying until it works' 'I will make it happen' Pessimistic Thinking Personalize: tendency to take the blame for everything. freeze. 'Its my fault' 'I am bad' or 'I am wrong' Pervasive: tendency to over-generalize. feel overwhelmed. 'Everything I do is wrong' 'I can do nothing right' 'I always make a mess of things' Permanent: tendency to exaggerate. 'It will always be this way' 'Nothing I do will make it change' 'It is always a mess' Tim Re: Optimism for Life

I definitely agree that optimism is better than pessimism. It frees a person to see options. However, along with optimism I believe a positive attitude must have a reason. There are people who slip slide thru life believing the next “opportunity” will be the winner. Yet they constantly blunder due to lack of reflection and careful investigation. In short, they act with presumption. I recall a story where two men had to attend a company convention in Cleveland at the same time. Both are positive that they will find a great place to stay, but only one calls ahead of time to secure a room. Only that one was had a place to stay during time. Why? Because a number of other companies also selected Edmonton during that same time frame for their conventions. There was not a room to be had for anyone planning on getting a room at the last minute. So while I support encouraging people to look at the bright side I also support people having a justified reason to expect the best.

WoW,
Thanks Orrin for hooking me up to "A Thomas Jefferson Education". WOW , what a book. I never imagined so much not read, especially classics, could effect me in such a profound way. I just started reading "The Closing of the American Mind" by Allen Bloom. It's interesting reading and so informative on so many different levels. One thing is we Americans have lost our Book, which used to be the Bible and the Declaration of Independance. Now, we have no book unlike the Greeks, Italians, French, etc. so we have lost our identity so to speak. When one adds that to the mentor home schooling in TJE and conversing about it and writing essay on differnt topics of discussion it would lead to no time for TV and possibly improving my philosophies of life and my ability to think. I like that he says you can still gain if one persue's the TJE at any age. I think you have somehow induced me to reignite my interest in reading and learning the great stuff. Just wanted to say "Thanks". I'm in your debt. I liked the spit balls on a battleship on a CD I was listening to, things to remember to not let life and people get us off track. I would encourage everyone to USE your local Library. Most of the Classic books are in the Library and have probably not been checked out in a long time. You justify their existence by checking out books and your mind benefits if you read the book. If You do TJE your wife and kids will benefit also. Sincerely, Dave Nelson Re: Optimism for Life

This might as well be a video for a Kenny Rogers song (Baseball Song) that I have always liked the message of.
Two of the lines in the song: He makes no excuses, He shows no fear, He just closes his eyes, and listens to the cheers Thank you for the reminder. |
