Re: Robert E. Lee - Self Denial
by

Orrin,
Robert E Lee is one of my favorite characters, which by the way, I thought they depicted him well in the movie “gods and generals”.
I put allot of thought into this question because free enterprise and personal growth mean so many things. I am grateful for most of these things, but there are some I am not grateful for; due only to my selfish depraved nature.
I can say this…I have spent the majority of 40 years feeding at the bottom of life; you know where all the realists and cynical people comfortably exist. When I was introduced to free enterprise, for the first time in my adult life I was able to look above my circumstance, and see a brighter future. I would call that my introduction to purpose or vision, but the most significant difference it made in me is it revealed my motives and more importantly my character. I could elaborate on these details, but I know for anyone that has had “the man in the mirror” experience, they know exactly what I am saying. Needless to say “personal growth” had to happen.
Nothing I had done in life, up to the point I was introduced to free enterprise and personal growth systems, had caused me to closely examine my motives and character. I faithfully attended church 3 times a week, involved myself in several different ministries and missions projects. Not that I regret doing any of those things, they just didn’t develop the hunger in me to grow and want more. Looking back, all those things I did up to that point seemed to have more of a negative growth result than a positive.
What I am talking about is best describe by A.W. Tozer in his book “The Pursuit of God”, chapter 3 “removing the veil”. I have built up a very intricately sown veil of the self-life and did not even know it was there until faced with the responsibilities that free enterprise put upon me. I believe the only way to know what it is like to be free of the self-life is found in Romans 12:1-2, and the only way to be a living sacrifice is to serve others. The greatest vehicle to use in service to other is our free enterprise system, but with that personal growth is paramount.
I hope that makes sense. Thank you for helping us dig deeper, and learn more.
God Bless you and your family,
Mark
