Re: George Wythe College & The Team

Orrin,
That has to be one of the best articles I have ever read!! His eloquent description of the erosion of character, principles, values, and purpose that has plagued mankind for centuries was awesome! It was said with almost a call to arms for those that stand for truth! About 9 months ago I read Bill O’Reilly’s book, Culture Warrior, and some of statistics he shared were quite alarming. After sifting through some of the chapters I came to a statistic that made me very mad. In fact, it made me down right disgusted! He said “2% of the people in this country claim themselves to be atheists and out of that 2%, 20% are in the media”!!!!! After reading that quote and setting aside the emotion I felt, I decide to make my life’s mission to develop the gift’s God gave me and speak up for those that are hypnotized or paralyzed by this mind-numbing assault of information!
Often times I have thought that cemeteries are one of the saddest places to go. Obviously it is sad when a loved one passes on, but for me the real burden I feel is the fact that beneath the ground I am standing on are certain empty bodies that allowed that culture erosion to make them feel the worst pain of all before their time on earth was over. That is the pain of regret! To me a cemetery is a symbol or place that where, for the most part, books were not written, voices were not heard, businesses were not started, causes were not pursued, etc, and the mark they left on the world was the dirt that framed in the place where their casket was lowered. That is painful!
I read a quote one time that said “your gifts and abilities are God’s gift to you and what you do with those gifts is your gift to God.” The fact is that we all are created for a reason or purpose. We were all born originals and it saddens me to know that most people die a copy! And then William Wallace summed it all up by saying “every man dies, but not every man really lives.”
So what will it take? You and Chris said it perfectly in your book “Leadership is an assault on the status quo.” I believe to start that assault each person needs to be the catalyst for change. You have to start with yourself! Too many people are like travel agents; they want to send people to places they have never been. To be an effective warrior for change you have to be a tour guide! You have to take people where you have been! In the TEAM world that means growing to your maximum potential! You cannot give what you do not have!
In times of a challenge spike, like this media war or anything else that arises in life, a true leader forfeits his or her right to do what is comfortable and start doing what is required! Why is that? Because a lot of times for a leader, he or she could only acquire the skills that will result by doing what is required to conquer the challenge spike. Then once the challenge spike has been conquered you will have framed up the beginning of what will be your legacy.
Some people think a big “Challenge Spike”, like the media war, will take a miracle. And if that is the case we are set up pretty good! Why would I say that? Because in order to receive a miracle you have to have a problem! So what does this miracle formula look like: When there is a need sensed by a few and each individual understand his or her responsibility and gives their all, regardless of the odds, that is when miracles happen! Think about it every miracle in the bible begins with a problem; a hurt, a need, a problem. THE BIGGER THE PROBLEM, THE BIGGER THE MIRACLE! However for most people in this world they don’t want a miracle they want magic. They will look like they want a change, but they will do everything in their power not to get involved. Perhaps because they think “I am only one person.” If I could something to people that have the “I am only person” attitude I would say this: There is no correlation between Prominence and Significance!!!!!! Remember you don’t need a majority to receive a miracle …….when there is a need sensed by a few.
In leadership when you find something that “wrecks” you and you feel the burning passion bubble from parts of your soul that you didn’t even know existed, FEED IT!! In Leadership that is what we call our holy discontent. AKA our PURPOSE!!! Just like Popeye said in the famous cartoon, we get to a point and we say “that’s all I can stands I can’t stands no more!!!” When you get to that point in your leadership walk all of a sudden your entire focus, energy, learning, thinking, vision, etc, is honed in on that discontent and you will be able to make an impact on a huge “Challenge Spike” that cannot be explained by human terms! Onward to a million!
Thanks Orrin!
Best,
Matt
