Re: Presidential Election 2008 - Principles - American Patriotism
by
Raymond
Orrin,
There are many things that I love about our nation, but most of all I love the fact that America represents HOPE! There is no other place on the planet were one can literally change the course of their destiny like we can in America. Of course the people of the nation are not perfect, but that does not and cannot detract from the God principles of freedom written in the Constitution.
There was a time in my life as an African American where I did feel a hint of anger when the Founding Fathers were portrayed as heroes of freedom while denying freedom to others based upon skin color for profit. But by the grace of God I have come to realize that their personal flaws have no bearing on the God inspired words written in the Constitution. Furthermore, if God had not used men like Jefferson and Washington to spark the American Revolution and pen the words of freedom, then men like Lincoln, Douglas, and King could not have brought about change. As a man with many flaws, I find it even more comforting to know that God used men with flaws to write words of freedom to inspire a nation to rise above their personal beliefs and esteem God's eternal values.
I believe the term "American" represents the Godly principles of Freedom, Charity, Love, Courage and Hope more than any nation in the World, and we "American's" take some much from the term when we place adjectives like "White", "Black", Female", "Hispanic", or "Italian" in front of that hallowed name!
In the movie "We Were Soldiers", Mel Gibson's character delivers the following monologue to the 7th Calvary on the of their deployment into Vietnam, and I believe he sums it up best...Just replace 7th Calvary and unit with TEAM...
Look around you. In the 7th Cavalry, we got a Captain from the Ukraine. Another from Puerto Rico. We've got Japanese, Chinese, Blacks, Hispanics, Cherokee Indians, Jews and Gentiles -- all Americans. Now here in the States, some men in this Unit may experience discrimination because of race or creed. But for you and me now, all that is gone. We're moving into the 'valley of the shadow of death' -- where you will watch the back of the man next to you, as he will watch yours. And you won't care what color he is or by what name he calls God.
They say we're leavin' home. We're goin' to what home was always supposed to be. So let us understand the situation. We are goin' into battle against a tough and determined enemy. I can't promise you that I will bring you all home alive. But this I swear before you and before Almighty God: That when we go into battle, I will be the first to set foot on the field, and I will be the last to stop off. And I will leave no one behind.
Dead or alive, we will all come home together. So help me God.
