I agree with your statement giving money does not create integrity to create in life. That is why I cited social entrepreneurism as an alternative. It is not a theory I invented; it came from observing the real results of Muhammad Yunnis (nobel peace prize winner) who has brought millions of eager people out of poverty through micro-loans. True they do not have a welfare system, but his method has adapted in many ways throughout the US now and many successful social entrepreneurs are helping those who do want to get off welfare. Yes, some won't, but enough do, and once they start proving a success, it changes the experience for all in that state. These are the results - not my thinking. See examples on sites like ashoka.org.
I do agree with you it is a hard choice for many to delay gratification, but as programs are working, more can be developed. Being a part of the solution and finding ways to inspire is a worthy challenge and makes life more worthwhile. Ironically, there may be a lot of money to be made in helping those who want to help themselves.
