Re: Free Enterprise and Greed

Great post Orrin. It is absolutely true that people mistake corporate success for greed in capitalistic society. If starbucks charges $4 for a coffee, we have the choice to spend our money there, or look for a cheaper coffee. If we buy the coffee, we cannot call the starbucks corporation greedy because we willingly traded our money for their coffee. However, I feel that corporate greed does exist in capitalistic societies, and manifests itself in two forms. The first form of corporate greed ran rampant though out the great depression and is described in Upton Sinclare's "the Jungle." Sinclare shows that corporate greed exists when companies care more about their profit margins than employee health and safety, and intentionally fail to warm or protect employees from unsafe conditions. This form of greed has lead to children losing limbs or lives caught in factory machinery. I understand that from an economic standpoint, there is nothing wrong with this because the children chose to work in the factory, but from a humanitarian standpoint, I feel that few will argue that safe work conditions are unnecessary. The second form of corporate greed is the form that presented itself in the ENRON scandals from a few years ago. This form arises when companies are not honest about their monetary worth, which leads in disastrous consequences for the stockholders and employees. The bizarre truth of the matter is that economic freedom stems from governmental controls. It is up to the government to make sure that all companies "play fair" in their endeavors to accumulate business and wealth, and do not succeed by sleazy and dishonest business practices. The second type of corporate greed leads to amazing gains followed by an apocalyptic collapse. We are currently witnessing the terrible effects of dishonest business. Looking forward to your thoughts on this. Thanks for listening. God Bless :)
